Tom Kelly, Operations Director, Inteb Managed Services

Tell us a little about Inteb Managed Services. When it was formed? What you do? Where you do it?

Inteb Managed Services started out in 2006 specialising in Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) and has since grown into a company of energy managers, surveyors, utility and environmental specialists serving a wide range of real estate clients in both public and private sectors. We work across the UK and worldwide with some of our larger clients.

Tell us a little about your background and your role within the company

I have a background in environmental management and consultancy and joined Inteb Managed Services in 2011. I am now Operations Director, managing our operational delivery, client relationships and network of service partners.

What was the inspiration behind the company?

Taking inspiration from other ethical businesses and social enterprises, we strive to be recognised as the most ethical and environmentally-conscious company in our industry, driven by our core values of openness and honesty.

Does Inteb have a typical client profile? Large? Small? Local? National?

Not really! We work with small local to large national and even multi-national companies. Our services are scalable so can be of benefit to businesses of all sizes but generally the larger energy consumers will benefit most from our services as they have more to reduce and therefore more money to save.

It’s a multi-layered service you provide because you’re not just sourcing cheaper utilities for clients but also reducing energy consumption and cutting emissions. So your clients are getting added value from the services you provide. Can you elaborate on that a little?

Generally, the services we provide are cost neutral to the end user because we aim to save money on the cost of utilities and reduce actual energy usage. Therefore the services we provide along the way are very cost-effective as well as being beneficial to the environment. Ultimately our goal is to improve the energy efficiency of UK businesses and we understand there are many “touch points” within our business along the way.

The growing issue of climate change must be a big driver for your business. How big a role do environmental issues play in the business?

They play a massive part because climate change is driving much of the public behaviour and corporate demand for our energy efficiency services. In particular, the issue of climate change is driving environmental legislation; part of our job is to stay on top of upcoming legislation and keep our clients informed about how to adapt and comply.

So you are helping other businesses to become more responsible, sustainable and ethical. Is it important that you are seen to be adopting the same values at Inteb also? If so, how do you achieve this?

As part of our drive to be the most ethical and environmentally-conscious company in our industry, we try and put ourselves at the forefront of promoting good energy efficiency practice and start within our own business with our ISO certified environmental management system. We understand that our own environmental impact is quite small but have plans in place to continue managing and reducing it, demonstrating to others what tangible actions they can take.

I assume yours is a competitive marketplace. What is your USP? What separates Inteb Managed Services from the competition?

The energy consultancy marketplace is highly competitive, with some very large players and lots of new entrants cropping up every week. We try and stay ahead of the competition by promoting our ethical, open and transparent approach which, surprisingly, is still regarded as a USP in our industry. This is how we are able to compete with the larger consultancies who manage larger volumes of energy than us. Quite often, they are using their buying power for their own benefit rather than their clients.

From a business perspective, how do you view the Brexit situation? Does it present you with obstacles or opportunities?

EU legislation has driven much of the UK’s own legislation around climate change and energy efficiency so Brexit presents us with insecurity around which direction future legislation will go in. A more united Europe is generally better for the type of business services we provide but we will do our best to generate as many opportunities as possible from the Brexit process.

What ambitions do you have for the business in the short to medium term?

We want more of our customers and the wider business environment to know about our core business values and align their own with ours. We also want to do much more work on our doorstep to reduce our carbon footprint even further. The vision for our business in the medium term is to be sustainable in the true sense of the word - environmentally, socially and financially - so that all of our staff, customers and the local area benefit from our existence.

Inteb Managed Services is a valued supporter of Wirral’s business community via your strategic partnership with Wirral Chamber of Commerce. What do you hope to achieve through your involvement there?

For us, our strategic partnership with Wirral Chamber of Commerce is all about helping to shape the future of the business community that we are a part of. The immediate benefits are greater exposure for Inteb, what we are about and what we do, as we want as many of our local business partners to be aware of us as possible.

You are a key speaker at Wirral Chamber’s In Business event on energy in February. Without giving too much away, what will your central message?

I will be keeping it simple. Having given talks on the subject for many years, I am all too aware of running away with my ideas and losing the audience! Energy efficiency will be a central message but I aim to be as non-technical as possible.

On a personal note, what are the best and worst aspects of your job?

My best is definitely living and working locally and being able to balance a busy working life with a family and social life. Wirral is a great place to live and work for those lucky enough to do both within such a small area. Worst aspects are the frequent journeys to London on Virgin Trains and the fact that they don’t operate a frequent passenger scheme - I would have racked up some serious points by now!

What would you say has been the highlight of your career to date?

My recent appointment as chair of the Wirral Chamber of Commerce Energy and Environment Forum has to be a particular highlight but my involvement with local projects such as the new St Cath’s were also very satisfying by way of making a mark on the local area. Other than that, helping to set up a certified Environmental Management System in Australia without needing to visit the country was a unique and fulfilling opportunity. I feel there are plenty more to come…

What ambitions do you have for the future?

We want to help put Wirral firmly on the map for high quality energy and sustainability services, products and solutions. Our region is uniquely and ideally placed to benefit from the opportunities that the energy and environmental sector will bring and we hope these benefits will be widely felt by ourselves and other local businesses alike.

If you could give some advice to your younger self, what would it be?

You need a number of bad jobs before you know you’ve got a good one.

What do you do to escape work and relax?

I rent an allotment plot across the road from my home. I put my phone on silent and appreciate the simple pleasures of digging soil and seeing the seasons change.

Do you have any sporting interests? Either watching or playing?

I am an active member of New Ferry Badminton Club - Thursdays at 7.30-9.30pm, new members welcome - and spend as much time as possible avoiding watching my beloved Leeds United go about their daily turmoil.
