The OVO Energy Tour Series and OVO Energy Tour of Britain has bee launched when both of these events will head to Wirral in May and September respectively as a part of the celebrations as the Liverpool City Region’s Borough of Culture for 2019.
Wirral Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Wirral Council, hosted an exclusive launch event at the Thornton Hall & Spa at which the invitees had the opportunity to hear more about the events schedule and see video presentations about how both businesses and the community can play key roles as part of these special cycling races.
Kate Eugeni of Wirral Chamber of Commerce introduced the evening speakers, and also updated the audience about what will be happening in Wirral during 2019, highlighting just some of the many events that will be taking place in the borough. These included Made of Iron Exhibition, Mersey River Festival, and the River of Light. She said, “2019 will be a huge year, particularly for the opportunities we will have to promote Wirral as a key Place destination and will give a boost to our visitor economy, with thousands of visitors expected to come to Wirral in the months ahead.”
Peter Hodges, Director at SweetSpot Group, then gave a presentation about the importance of the OVO Energy Tour Series, not only as sporting spectacular but also as a platform for the advantage of Wirral’s visitor economy and business promotion, with the race stages being broadcast on TV. He said, “We are looking forward to the year and coming to Wirral for the first time, following discussions about the event last year it very quickly became apparent that the arrival of this fantastic road race presents a great opportunity, particularly with it being part of the Borough of Culture for 2019.”
This year’s OVO Energy Tour Series round will take place in Birkenhead on Tuesday 21 May using a circuit based around Hamilton Square and features both men’s and women’s races. It will be the first time since 2010 that a round of the unique, team-based OVO Energy Tour Series has taken place on Merseyside. Wirral will also host the OVO Energy Tour of Britain, the UK’s most prestigious professional cycle race, which will take place later in the year during September.
Details of the stage, one that will see the world’s top teams and riders heading to Wirral, and the exact date for the race, will be announced as part of the full national launch in the spring.
Paula Basnett, CEO of Wirral Chamber of Commerce said, “ We already have an exciting itinerary of events which will take place throughout Wirral during 2019, but having seen the opportunities which the OVO Energy Tour will bring it will be an exciting time for us during May and September, particularly with large crowds of spectators from within Wirral and visitors to the area, and millions of people watching the event on television.”
The message from the Tour representatives is that these events offer not only opportunities for businesses to be engaged with the event, but also for the wider community to get involved.
