Smylie Ltd presented with Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade

In April 2018, Smylie Ltd the family-run international export business was awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the International Trade category for the second time. 

This achievement was officially recognised at a presentation event in September when Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant, Mark Blundell, visited Smylie headquarters in Bromborough to undertake the official Grant of Acceptance ceremony to the company, an honour accepted by its Managing Director, Chris Smylie (pictured right with Paula Basnett of Wirral Chamber of Commerce).

Chris Smylie, said, “It is a great honour to be receiving the Queens Award for a second time in four years and we are delighted that our hard work and success has been recognised once again.

He added, "We have a great team and without all their hard work and commitment this achievement would not be possible, but we have to keep looking at ways to improve our business and stay one step ahead of the competition. The future looks bright for Smylie Ltd and I am excited to to see how the business develops over the coming years.”

From its purpose built 30,000 sq ft facility, Smylie Ltd has grown and made major investments in the region of £500k through introducing new technology and processes which have added even greater efficiency to its distribution operation. 

This has included developing a bespoke IT software system, installing a new state of the art conveyor system, constructing new offices and a mezzanine floor in the building.

Chris Smylie continued, “The business has gone from strength to strength and with the help of Wirral Chamber of Commerce and Wirral Council we have not looked back. Having our own bespoke modern unit enabled our growth and has assisted in achieving a large turnover increase over the last four years, together with developing new and existing markets, private label ventures, and increasing staff numbers, all factors in achieving the Queens Award.”

Paula Basnett, CEO of Wirral Chamber of Commerce, added, “We are delighted and very proud that Smylie Ltd, a key strategic member of Wirral Chamber of Commerce, has been rewarded once again with this prestigious award recognition in being one of the UK’s leading export management companies.  For many years Chris and his team has been supported by the Wirral Chamber of Commerce through our Export Documentation service, therefore, we are excited about the future trade growth of the business on a  global scale.”

Smylie Ltd employs exports in excess 20,000 products to 40 locations globally, specialising in exporting British food and drink favourites including Cadbury, PG Tips, Bird’s Eye and Muller to embassies, distributors, food service companies and supermarkets, and in the coming months will be launching its own brand Kings Dairy Cheeses and Yoghurts, complementing its existing Kings Deli Crisps range.
