Cammell Laird unveils speakers for Wirral health and safety conference

Merseyside shipyard and marine engineering services company Cammell Laird is inviting professionals, in particular from its existing and prospective supply chain, to attend its inaugural Health and Safety conference on Wirral on November 28.

The event at Thornton Hall Hotel and Spa will see the formal launch of Cammell Laird’s five-year Health and Safety plan and is set to feature speakers from Cammell Laird’s senior management team as well as Sarah Palfreyman a Health and Safety Executive inspector specialising in ship building and ship repair. Other speakers include Neil Dando, a chief naval architect with the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, whose role covers MOD naval compliance for stability, structures, escape, evacuation, aviation, and explosives. They will be joined by renowned Health and Safety speaker Eldeen Pozniak who is attending from Canada and Dr Jennifer Napier, a practising occupational health physician, with a special interest in promoting wellbeing at work.

Tony Potter, Cammell Laird’s health, safety, environment and quality director said the event will share best practice and insight into how Cammell Laird is evolving to meet the demands of industry.

“This event is aimed at customers, suppliers, Health and Safety professionals as well as company directors,” he said. “We want to show how Health and Safety is changing and our vision for the future of a safe and healthier shipyard. We are taking a stricter management led approach to Health and Safety. That means everyone in the business lives it, drives it and understands it. Our approach is senior management led so the highest level of the company is responsible and accountable. This is why we want to extend the event to company directors – safety is your business, it is not just a department in your company. Having a rigorous approach to safety protects your people, your reputation and your bottom line.”

Mr Potter said 2019 has seen Cammell Laird ramp up Health and Safety drawing on the experience of existing board members together with the new chief operating officer Tony Graham, managing director Paul Owen as well as Tony Potter’s background gained working in senior Health and Safety roles in shipyards around the world including Drydocks World in Dubai.

“Health and Safety is a fundamental part of the business model at Cammell Laird as set out by the new management team,” he said. “Shipyards, by their nature, are some of the most hazardous and dangerous environments in industry and we want to share knowledge of what methods, procedures and equipment are most effective. Health and Safety is at the forefront of every decision we make and improvements are continual. We are now working towards ISO 45001, the occupational Health and Safety standard and will be sharing background on this huge journey we are going on with our workforce, trade union and senior management team.”

Earlier this year, in May, Cammell Laird was honoured in Parliament for its ‘best in class’ partnership working. The company was recognised for the way it shares knowledge, the leadership it demonstrates and the way it develops partnerships with suppliers, customers and businesses it works with. This approach helped Cammell Laird achieve the prestigious ISO44001, the industry standard presented by the Institute for Collaborative Working, following a rigorous and independent audit.

Mr Potter said Cammell Laird now has its sights set on winning more Health and Safety awards notably with the British Safety Council 5 Star Best Practice Audit and ultimately its prestigious Sword and Globe of Honour awards.
