A fresh venture by Progress to Excellence Ltd is giving food for thought to a new training initiative.
The company has opened a stylish bistro and coffee shop close to its headquarters in the iconic Pacific Road building in Birkenhead. The pavement-style No.4 Pacific operates as a daytime café for employees working for companies based in the Pacific Road Business Hub as well as the general public. Outside catering is also part of the enterprise.
However, a unique feature of No.4 Pacific Road will be its eventual training ground for hospitality students.
Running the operation is 24-year-old Lewis Gill who is bringing his eight years’ knowledge of the hospitality industry to offer a smart and trendy alternative to a workers’ canteen.
He said: “No.4 Pacific Road might be at the centre of a business operation in Birkenhead with its main customers working here. But that’s no reason not to have a chic and stylish place to have your lunch or to have an imaginative menu if you want to eat back at the office – all made on the premises with fresh produce.
“We’re serving breakfasts with healthy options of fruit, porridge and yoghurt as well as sausage, bacon and eggs. For lunch there’s salads, sandwiches, wraps, pasta dishes and hot food with an amazing selection of pies and pasties, all from locally sourced produce and prepared by a traditional Wirral family butcher. An important part of the venture is our outside catering and we’re working with businesses to cater for meetings, conferences and training days."
Lewis left school at 16 and has spent all his young working life in hospitality, learning his trade “from the bottom up”.
Sandra Kirkham, managing director of Progress to Excellence Group, said: “Lewis is a perfect example of a young person starting out on a career straight from school, learning all the skills hands-on and developing into a smart and competent individual who has taken on the challenge of No.4 Pacific Road and having the opportunity to run a really successful operation.
“He will be a great role model for other young people who we plan to train at the bistro for a qualification to set them on the road to a career in hospitality.”
