Sandra Kirkham, Progress to Excellence, Birkenhead

Tell us about your company?

Progress to Excellence is a national provider of Training and Education services based in Egerton House on the waterfront in Birkenhead. We employ 45 staff and offer a full range of training programmes for employers and staff in health and social care and business related sectors throughout the United Kingdom. We also provide a dedicated no-cost recruitment service for employers via bespoke training academies.

What is you background?

I am steeped in health and social care! After school I trained as a radiographer and then progressed into working in children’s residential services for Wirral Council which I absolutely loved with a passion. My last 16 years have been spent driving out training services within health and social care and business sectors – enhancing skillsets of employees ensures that the end users benefit from an improved service. I don’t want to read any more horror stories in the news about clients in care settings receiving poor standards of care and this is one way of making a difference.

Where do you want the business to be in two years?

I want Progress to Excellence to be on the lips of every employer in the UK as the best provider of Education and Training

If you could suggest something to Government which would help businesses grow what would it be?

Stop changing eligibility funding rules for training providers who supply vital training services for employers and employees who need to up skill – if it isn’t broken then don’t try to keep fixing it!

What do you do to try and relax away from the office?

My husband Steve and I love walking to unwind. Our favourite local walk is along the beachfront from West Kirby to Hoylake and it always finishes with a nice glass of wine and a bite to eat.

What hobbies do you have?

Socialising and holidaying with those near and dear to me – family and friends!

Have you any hidden talents that we don’t know about?

Far too many, including ironing, washing, housework, gardening and, believe me, they are all well hidden!

One piece of advice you would give an 18 year old Sandra Kirkham starting out today?

Never fear those who hold power because of monetary wealth – respect comes from knowledge and expertise and not money.

Any final comments?

Yes – check out our website - and call to see how we can help your business. If you don’t, then you will never know what you are missing!

A business which is truly committed to offering and providing a first class service, and one which benefits from the hands-on management style of Sandra Kirkham.  Find out more about Progress to Excellence on its website
