Tell us about your company?
Stiebel Eltron UK was launched in 2008 and we are based at the Wirral International Business Park in Bromborough. We are a daughter company of the global renewable technologies manufacturer Stiebel Eltron, and provide a range of green energy systems such as ground and air source heat pumps, solar thermal and solar PV. Since starting the business we have built a UK-wide network of installer partners, who we work alongside to design, specify and install in both commercial and residential properties.
What is your background?
After studying Business & Finance at Liverpool John Moores University, I joined logistics, distribution and delivery group TNT as an Area Sales Manager for the Liverpool and Merseyside area. After spending four very successful years there I joined Applied Energy Products Ltd in Peterborough where I spent eight years. During this time I was Sales Manager for the North-West before moving into the National Account team managing relationships with wholesale chains. Applied Energy took over the distribution rights of Stiebel Eltron in the UK and I helped grow the brand adding £1m in turnover in the first year. However, Applied Energy Products Ltd was then purchased by Stiebel Eltron’s main competitor effectively ending its relationship. I was then approached by Stiebel Eltron to set up a new UK company which resulted in the move to Wirral.
Where do you want the business to be in two years?
Stiebel Eltron UK is currently enjoying steady growth and we want this to continue. We are working hard to win a bigger market share of both ground and air source heat pumps, while our Home Comforts range, such as instantaneous hot water heaters and panel heaters, continue to sell well. We would also love to work with more businesses and installers in the Wirral and wider Merseyside area – so if anyone sees this and thinks we can help each other, please don’t hesitate to give me a call!

If you could suggest something to Government which would help businesses grow what would it be?
There are the obvious ones such as better tax benefits for SMEs and increased lending, but for the green energy industry the Government needs to be much clearer and decisive on its policies. For example we faced too many delays to the Renewable Heat Incentive, which affected consumer confidence and in turn had a knock-on effect to renewable technology businesses such as ours. Also the Green Deal has been problematic since its launch earlier this year – we need focused policies and a commitment to follow them through.
What do you do to try and relax away from the office?
My relaxation time is spent with my wife Debbie and three children. I’m lucky to have very supportive family and friends and they are very important to me
What hobbies do you have?
I’m an Everton FC fan, so it’s a bit of a stretch to say I enjoy watching the games, but football is certainly a passion. I also enjoy keeping fit and outdoor activities with friends – we have done activities like white-water rafting and are set to go caving in Snowdonia soon. They’re not always a pleasurable experience but it’s always a great memory to look back on!
Have you any hidden talents that we don’t know about?
With three young children, my ability to function well every day on very little sleep should be considered something of a talent!
One piece of advice you would give an 18 years old Mark McManus starting out today?
I would probably tell myself not to go university but to try my hand at an Apprenticeship or something similar. There are lots of fantastic opportunities across the Wirral and North West for school leavers and too many young people are getting average degrees and getting into large debt.
Any final comments?
The Wirral is an excellent place to do business and it is great to see Wirral Business Partnership working hard to raise the region’s profile both locally and further afield. There is so much work that Wirral companies can share, so it is vital that organisations exist to bring people together, build relationships and facilitate business deals.
Certainly Mark and his team at Stiebel Eltron UK are a leading example of a business developing the technologies of ground and air source heat pumps, and to assist it has just released its own mobile app illustrating all of its product range.
