If we’re talking about ‘leading by example,’ then look no further than Lyndell Horsford. Having served in the British Army and being stationed throughout the world, Lyndell not only had to deal with army life, but also the transition from the structure of serving in the forces to the chaos of adjusting to civilian life. It was because of his experiences that he decided to start his own recruitment agency, LJH Recruitment CIC - helping ex-services personnel to get their lives back on track and become job-ready.
Lyndell was born in St. George’s in Grenada in 1987 but came to the UK in 2009 and was immediately attracted to joining the British Army, which he did the same year. Although he travelled the world, it wasn’t until he was posted to Helmand Province, in Afghanistan that he experienced trauma on a scale he was unprepared for.
To make matters worse, Lyndell also faced discrimination within his own regiment and this left him with high anxiety, later diagnosed as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
However, as Lyndell points out: “Coming out of the army into Civvy Street was just as difficult as anything I experienced in the army.” Struggling to come to terms with a life without structure, he entered into a spiral of depression. But an old army friend, who had turned his life around, despite losing both legs, inspired Lyndell to get control back in his life – and the seeds for LJH Recruitment were sown.
With support from the team, Lyndell now has a robust business plan which he will be using to submit for
funding to develop the onsite facilities along with much-needed infrastructure.
LJH Recruitment CIC will provide work placements and potential permanent employment to ex-forces personnel, seeking to get a job. But LJH Recruitment is much more than that. Lyndell can offer support with CV writing, interview techniques and effective communication skills as well as emotional support. Being based at Sir Frederick Lister House in Birkenhead, Lyndell will also be looking to develop a safe place for his client group to meet, chill out and get fit. Ironically, The Sir Frederick Lister Building is the first ever building used by the British Legion in the UK, another first for Wirral!
LJH Recruitment CIC is best summed up with its strapline – “No Veteran Left Behind.”
When Lyndell approached Enterprise Hub at Wirral Chamber, he was still in the early stages of putting his ideas together.
However, with support from the team, Lyndell now has a robust business plan which he will be using to submit for funding to develop the onsite facilities along with much-need infrastructure. When asked about what advice he would give to anyone starting their own business, he replied: “Don’t let the fear stop you! Be positive and keep pushing forward.”
