What is your background?
I graduated from Sheffield Hallam University with a 2:1 Degree in International Hospitality Business Management. After completing my degree, I went to work in the hospitality industry as a restaurant manager. I then decided I wanted to use my business management skills in other sectors, so went to work in the corporate field.
I have been an Executive Personal Assistant for over 10 years, working at CEO, CFO and Board level. I have worked in a variety of different business sectors, Media (Trinity Mirror) Video Game Development (Sony Computer Entertainment Europe) and Engineering (Flowgroup)
Be focussed on what it is you want to achieve. Be clear in the direction that you are going and try to go above and beyond people’s expectations when you can.
If you could suggest one thing to Government to help business growth what would it be?
I would say that the Government need to look at supporting small start-up companies and give them more opportunities when it comes to funding and advice. Also many businesses like mine are there to help support other local businesses, so more assistance with business to business engagement and awareness. As my offering is an outsourced service, I would also recommend that the Government do more to promote for UK outsourcing.
What do you do to relax away from the office?
I like to spend as much time as I can with my husband and my 5 year old daughter. I also like to spend time with close family and friends.
What hobbies do you have?
In my spare time, I like to keep fit. I go swimming and running. I am planning to carry out a half marathon this year.
What one piece of advice would you give an 18-year-old Claire Grubb starting out today?
I would say be focussed on what it is you want to achieve. Be clear in the direction that you are going and to set SMART goals along the way. Work as hard as you possibly can, even go above and beyond people’s expectations when you can. Business can be hard emotionally, financially and physically! I would say that it’s also extremely important to be kind to yourself and congratulate yourself on your accomplishments.
Any Final thoughts?
Keep your vision of what you want firmly fixed in your head and let that pull you through
