Alastair Gould, McEwan Wallace, Birkenhead

Tell us about your company?

McEwan Wallace is Wirral’s largest firm of chartered accountants and business advisersand is headquartered in Birkenhead employing 50 members of staff in its Argyle Street premises. We offer  a range of services to clients with Business Advice, Tax, Wealth Management and Payroll divisions - all of whom deliver significant value to their clients. The McEwan Wallace team are responsible for helping to grow some of Wirral’s largest and most established businesses.

Where do you want the business to be in two years?

McEwan Wallace is in an extremely strong position and we have grown our client base by 10pc in 2013. We have a fantastic structure here at the firm which consists of four partners and six excellent managers. I am sure we will continue to grow at our current rate and whilst delivering the same outstanding service to clients.

What is your background?

I am proud to be Birkenhead born and bred and I hope I am a key member of the Wirral business community.  I have over 30 years of experience in dealing with owner managed businesses and small to medium size companies with particular emphasis on tax planning, tax efficient profit extraction and exit route planning. I like to think I have unrivalled knowledge of current issues affecting businesses and I advise companies based on their individual needs and specific sector conditions.

If you could suggest something to government which would help business growth what would it be?

We read a lot in the press about the need for Government to talk more to our banks and improve lending. However I believe it is imperative that the Government does more to help our SME community. They are after all the backbone of the British economy and need support from the Government to enable them to flourish.

What do you do to relax away from the office?

My wife Ann and I take frequent trips to Majorca which we always enjoy as well as visiting other countries. I have two children - a daughter who is also a chartered accountant and married to a chartered accountant and a son who works in banking who lives with his partner in London. We always enjoy getting together but try to resist talking about numbers.

What hobbies do you have?

I am a member of the Royal Liverpool Golf Club. I have been a member at the Club since 1996 and I had the privilege of enjoying the 2006 Open at first hand. It is wonderful to be a member of a club which upholds such strong traditions.

Have you any hidden talents that we don't know about?

Well – everyone who knows me will know that it is not in my nature to hide any of my talents!

What one piece of advice would you give an 18 years old Alastair Gould starting out today?

My advice to all young people starting out would be to think before you leap. Don’t make rash decisions in business and always take time before making a final decision.

Any final comments?

I love what I do and I am not going anywhere else!

Birkenhead born and bred and proud to be still helping local businesses, Alastair and the team at McEwan Wallace certainly have developed their own strong business traditions over the years.  To see more about McEwan Wallace please visit its website.
